Session of the month


This is one of the 1,000 training sessions from the Feeton curriculum. This month, there is a special training session for goalkeepers aged 13 and older. Each session within the curriculum has a specific goal.

The goal of this training session is to help goalkeepers improve their handling of crosses.

Each exercise is supported by an image, an animation, a detailed explanation, required materials, and the field organization. Beneath each exercise, various icons may appear, providing links to additional supporting text and media:

Organization:

Practice footwork and warm up.

Coordination.

  • GK’s practice one by one.
  • B plays/throws the ball to A, A plays/throws it back.
  • Knee lift/dribbling forward over the cones.
  • Two steps between the cones.
  • After the last cone, step back with weight forward.
  • The coach plays the second ball.

Hint: The coach can start to vary after, for example, four balls.

The goalkeepers can also practice different catching and/or kicking techniques.

Organization

Practice footwork and coordination.

  • B plays/throws the ball to A.
  • A controls and/or returns the ball.
  • Forward footwork over the cones.
  • Start sideways footwork at the crossing.
  • After the last cone, step back (backward).
  • GC plays a second ball.
  • Rotating.

Hint: Vary the incoming balls, switch after about 4 balls.
Stepping backward helps maintain good balance.
Catching & controlling a cross (short distance from the end line).

Organization:

  • GK’s practice individually or with two keepers at a time.
  • Start from the middle position.
  • Handle a high ball or cross.
  • Throw the caught ball back.
Hint: With 3 or 4 keepers, you can work on both sides to increase repetition and variation.
End line cross -> low -> ready position.

Organization:

  • Goalkeepers practice one at a time.
  • Position yourself in the goal.
  • Judge and choose your position.
  • Player taps the ball towards the end line and crosses.
  • Cut of the angle and catch the cross.
  • Roll the caught ball back.
Hint: Work alternately.
